  • One day replaces a whole travel day plus a separate safari
  • Your luggage travels with you — no storage, no backtracking
  • Leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles & 200+ birds
  • Air-conditioned van transfer, open 4×4 for the game drive

How the day runs

Your journey, hour by hour

One driver, one vehicle, your luggage with you — and a proper game drive in the middle of it.

  1. 03:00 (or 12:30)

    Pickup in Ella

Collected with your luggage from your Ella hotel — door to door wherever the lanes allow, or a short walk to the nearest accessible point if not.

  2. ~05:30

    Arrive at Yala

Down through the tea country and out to the plains as the park gates open.

  3. 06:00 – 09:00

    3-hour Yala game drive

Swap the van for an open 4×4 — leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, water buffalo and over 200 bird species.

  4. ~09:30

    Breakfast & freshen up

Optional picnic breakfast, then back into the air-conditioned van for the coast run.

  5. Early afternoon

    Arrive at your beach hotel

Straight to the door in Tangalle, Mirissa, Weligama, Unawatuna, Galle or wherever you're staying.

Compare your options

Every way to get from Ella to the south coast

It's roughly six hours of driving whichever way you do it, and there's no direct train. Here's the honest comparison — including the options that cost less than ours.

Public bus (via Wellawaya)

≈ $3–5

7–9 hrs

By far the cheapest, and perfectly doable. Expect at least one change at Wellawaya or Matara, no luggage space to speak of, and no air conditioning. A long day if you're carrying big bags.

Train + bus

≈ $5–10

8–10 hrs

The Ella–Badulla line doesn't run to the coast, so you'd backtrack inland and still finish on a bus. Scenic in parts, but slower than the bus alone and rarely worth it in this direction.

Private taxi / car

≈ $70–100

5–6 hrs

Fast, direct and comfortable, with your bags in the boot. But it's a pure transfer — you'll pass within 20 minutes of Yala's gate and see none of it.

With us — transfer + Yala safari

From $30 pp

Full day

The same journey with a 3-hour game drive folded into the middle, your luggage carried the whole way, and a door-to-door drop at your beach hotel. Because you were paying for the transfer regardless, the safari costs far less than booking it separately.

Before you book

Why your pickup is at 03:00

It's the question we're asked most, so here's exactly how the morning works.

Yala National Park’s gates open at first light, and that is when the park is at its best — wildlife moves at dawn and settles once the heat builds. Getting you there for the gate means starting in the dark.

These are shared tours, so we run a staggered collection: vehicles work across town picking up one hotel at a time, and everyone converges at our office in Debarawewa, Tissamaharama at the same moment. From there you transfer into the safari jeeps and head for the gate together.

That’s why we quote a window rather than a single time. Where you fall inside it depends on the day’s bookings and where your hotel sits on the run — we confirm your exact time the evening before, so you are never guessing.

Loved by travellers from every corner of the world

Our tracker spotted a leopard within the first hour. He knew exactly where to wait — the whole jeep was speechless. Best morning of our Sri Lanka trip.

Picked us up in Ella, safari through the park, dropped at our beach hotel by evening. Zero stress and we saw dozens of elephants. Incredible value.

Route FAQs

We drop anywhere along the south coast between Hambantota and Galle — including Bundala, Hambantota, Ambalantota, Kalametiya, Ranna, Kahandamodara, Rekawa, Goyambokka, Tangalle, Marakolliya, Nilwella, Silent Beach, Dickwella, Hiriketiya, Talalla, Gandara, Dondra, Matara, Polhena, Mirissa, Weligama, Midigama, Ahangama, Koggala, Habaraduwa, Thalpe, Dalawella, Unawatuna, Galle, Gintota, Hikkaduwa. If your hotel is a little off the main road, tell us and we'll still get you to the door.

It stays with your driver in the transport vehicle, safely with the team the whole day. You only take what you want on the jeep, and everything is waiting for you when the game drive ends.

Yes. Choose a midday pickup from Ella and you'll do an afternoon game drive, arriving on the coast in the evening. Both windows are excellent for wildlife.

The game drive is in a jeep with your own licensed tracker-guide, and you can upgrade to a fully private vehicle at checkout if you'd like the whole jeep to yourselves.

About 7 hours door to door, depending on your drop-off point. Tangalle is the quickest; Galle and Hikkaduwa are the longest.

Almost always, yes. We pick up door to door wherever the roads allow, and our drivers know Ella's back lanes well. A handful of guesthouses sit up very steep or narrow tracks a vehicle can't safely climb — in that case we'll agree an easy meeting point a few minutes' walk away and confirm it with you the night before, so there are no surprises at 3am.

Our safari jeeps have rain covers, so a passing shower is no problem — Yala is often at its most active just after rain. If the weather turns too severe to safari safely, we'll reschedule your tour or give you a full refund.

Sunscreen, a cap and sunglasses, comfortable shoes and a refillable water bottle. If you're a Sri Lankan resident or from a SAARC country, bring your ID or passport for the reduced park rate. And if you haven't pre-paid your park tickets at checkout, bring cash for the entrance fee at the gate.

Yes — children of all ages are welcome. Under-2s ride free and under-12s travel with an adult. Let us know their ages when you book and we'll make sure the vehicle suits.
